The Elgin Police Department's Social Services Unit is comprised of professional, licensed social workers and counselors. All services are designed to improve family relations, school, and interpersonal relationships. Services provided may also encompass intervention and prevention of behavioral problems that can lead to criminal activities. All services are free to residents of Elgin. Services may include crisis intervention, crisis counseling , individual counseling, family counseling, legal advocacy, and information referrals to other community resources.
The Collaborative Crisis Services Unit (CCSU) is responsible for conducting follow-up visits for individuals who could benefit from mental or behavioral health services. CCSU utilizes community resources to connect individuals with appropriate services which can reduce patrol calls for service. CCSU has three primary areas of focus: mental & behavioral health, substance use disorder services, & homelessness issues. The primary model used by CCSU is a co-response model, which pairs a sworn police officer with a mental health professional. CCSU currently has 4 officers , 3 mental health professionals, & an emotional support K9, Chance.
Alcoholics Anonymous is an international fellowship of men and women who have had a drinking problem. It is nonprofessional, self-supporting, multiracial, apolitical, and available almost everywhere. There are no age or education requirements. Membership is open to anyone who wants to do something about his or her drinking problem.
Narcotics Anonymous is a global, community-based organization which offers recovery from the effects of addiction through working a 12-step program, including regular attendance to meetings. The group atmosphere provides help from peers and offers an ongoing support network for addicts who wish to pursue and maintain a drug-free lifestyle. Membership is free, and we have no affiliation with any organizations outside of NA including governments, religions, law enforcement groups, or medical and psychiatric associations.
SAMHSA’s National Helpline is a free, confidential, 24/7, 365-day-a-year treatment referral and information service (in English and Spanish) for individuals and families facing mental and/or substance use disorders.
NAMI Kane County North is located in Elgin and is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization located inside the Ecker Center for Behavioral Health. NAMI provides resources and offers support groups for family members to help people who face mental illness within their family.
NAMI also offers a free 8-week education program, open to adult (18+) family members, significant others, or friends of people who live with mental illness designed to improve the coping and problem-solving abilities of the people closest to an individual living with a mental health condition.
Founded in 1998 by the creators of the Academy Award®-winning short film TREVOR, The Trevor Project is a leading national organization providing crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer & questioning (LGBTQ+) young people under the age of 25.
The Association for Individual Development (AID) has served individuals with developmental, intellectual, physical & mental health challenges, those who have suffered a trauma & those at risk. Vital, life-enriching services that promote the highest level of independence and community participation include: autism programs; permanent supportive housing; in-home support; developmental & vocational training; job placement & on-the-job coaching services; crisis intervention; victims services; mental health treatment; behavioral intervention; health & wellness; community education; & advocacy. AID operates community day centers in Elgin.
Family Service Association of Greater Elgin Area is dedicated to quality, accessible, client-centered, equitable, and holistic behavioral health services. They offer various resources, including but not limited to outpatient therapy, screening and assessments, mentoring, family support programs, crisis intervention teams, and school-based therapy.
